Mortal Fools Youth Theatre presents: The Bigger Picture The voices of 75 young people from Northumberland and the North East come together in a collection of short films, created by Mortal Fools Youth Theatre with Fly Girl Films and Mortal Fools’ associate artists.

Across 6 poignant and purposeful film shorts, you’re invited to see the world through Mortal Fools Youth Theatre’s eyes, and feel what it’s like to grow up today. Their realities, lived experiences, inner worlds, and fantastical dreams - interwoven with the positive changes they want to make in the world, and the hope that we can all be kinder to one another. And have more FUN in our lives!

Filming Weekend in Ashington We will be filming in Hirst Park, Ashington on 1st & 2nd July 2023, as part of the The Bigger Picture project. We thought it would be a great excuse to host a Mortal Fools creative pop-up! Everyone is welcome, so why not drop in across the day, meet and chat with Team Mortal Fools, and do something free and creative during the following slots:
Saturday 1st July 2023 10:30 - 12:30 14:00 - 16:00
Sunday 2nd July 2023 10:15 - 12:00 13:30 - 15:45 During these timeslots, we will have:
Drop-in artist-led workshops, including zine-making (Saturday) and origami making (Sunday).
'The future of Ashington – Your town in 50 years' creative activity – draw, write, collage!
Write a letter to the Prime Minister / a local decision maker – what do you want them to know about Ashington? What’s important to you?
Mindful colouring-in (we’ve got colouring pens a-plenty!)
Team Mortal Fools will also be on hand to chat about our Ashington Youth Theatre groups, projects, and our upcoming screening events. You can also drop in and contribute to The Bigger Picture films and content creation by:
Responding to our postcard prompts and posting them into our post box.
Your voice can be part of our film’s soundscape. We will have a pop-up sound booth on the day - so please chat to our team and contribute your opinions & thoughts in response to our questions.
Note: for voice recording and filming, we will need an adult (over 18) to sign consent forms.
We'll be stationed near the Ashington Pavilion (look for our colourful flags) with free activities for young people and families - so why not come find us to see what's happening and learn more?
Screening Events - Summer 2023 During each screening event, we will share information about our upcoming Mortal Fools Youth Theatre projects - and our practitioners will be on-hand to chat about our work and joining our groups. THE BIGGER PICTURE @ YMCA NORTHUMBERLAND Thursday 24th August 2023 YMCA Northumberland, North View, Ashington, Northumberland, NE63 9XQ Come along to one of our The Bigger Picture themed workshops, hosted by our very own Mortal Fools practitioners! We'll watch the films together, and take part in some fun creative activities - including drama games related to the films. If you're curious about Mortal Fools Youth Theatre, these workshops are the perfect opportunity to experience working with our practitioners. And if you're not, they're a chance to express yourself and have fun! Workshop #1 10:30 - 12:30 Designed for 7-12 year olds Workshop #2 14:30 - 16:30 Designed for 12-18 year olds Places are limited to 20 young people per workshop. Workshops are free (donations welcome) but pre-bookable.
