The Straw Yard opens in Berwick, bringing a fresh lease of life to unused space.
The Straw Yard is Berwick’s newest arts venue. Tucked just inside the town’s historic walls, it’s a multi-purpose accessible space consisting of an outdoor area, office facilities and a studio.
Hosting talks, performances, exhibitions and a variety of exciting and creative events throughout the year, the team running The Straw Yard is bringing one of Berwick’s unique spaces back to life in an original and exciting way.
It’s now home to the formerly London-based Tortive Theatre run by Artistic Director Ben Humphrey, who moved to Berwick in 2020 with his family and says of the town:
“It felt like such a natural fit for creative work. It’s beautiful, well-connected and full of incredible people, stories and history. After one visit, I was in love with the place.”
Initially The Straw Yard was intended to be used as a rehearsal and development space for Tortive Theatre’s productions, but funding from the CCZ (Create Berwick) has enabled the company to open the site up to other creatives in the area, with the intention that it will become a brave, creative space that enables collaboration and support with people and companies from across the UK and beyond.
If you haven’t yet seen any of their productions (which include a string of 5 star shows at the Edinburgh Fringe), you really must. Catch their first Christmas show ‘Little Red Riding Hood: A Trial’, a co-production with Alnwick Playhouse, from now until 31 December and decide whether or not the big bad wolf is guilty for his alleged granny-eating crime!
More information about future shows in this intimate and atmospheric venue, including an outdoor summer run, will be published on www.thestrawyard.co.uk and on social media channels.
