Berwick-upon-Tweed based Artist Residency Opportunity

Maltings (formerly Berwick Visual Arts) and Newcastle University’s Centre for Rural Economy (CRE) and Institute for Creative Arts Practice (the Institute) have an ongoing programme of artist residencies and commissions that supports the exchange and sharing of knowledge and experience between the artist and researchers to inform critical responses to contemporary rural issues.

Importantly, the residency enables new and unexpected dialogues, flows of ideas and exchanges between creative arts practitioners, individuals, communities, and researchers and students at the university.

We are now inviting applications for our next artist in residence opportunity which will take place during 2022. The residency is an opportunity for an artist whose practice explores ideas around food production and consumption to collaborate with Beth Clark, Research Associate and Public Engagement Officer at the Centre for Rural Economy.

The appointed artist will be expected to be resident in the town of Berwick-upon-Tweed in rural Northumberland for up to four months and use this as the context for the development of their work during the residency in collaboration with the local community as well as students, and academics at Newcastle University.

Applications are open to artists who have an established, accessible and socially engaged visual arts practice that explores food themes and can demonstrate this through a track record of creating new work through projects, exhibitions and commissions.

The successful applicant will receive a bursary of £15,500 towards the research and development of work during the residency and to support accommodation and travel costs.

Full application details here - https://www.maltingsberwick.co.uk/for-artists/residencies/1516-2/ Deadline for applications is 5pm on Monday 6th December with interviews for shortlisted applicants in January 2022.

If you would have any questions about the residency or would like the guidelines in a different format please email galleries@maltingsberwick.co.uk or contact 01289 330 99.
